With first-time Austin visitors and outsiders about to descend on the city, one question is all over social media: What is there to do in Austin while at SXSW?

FOOD:

Erin Thompson: Eat local and buy local. Go Local Cards [get you a discount.]
Find food trailers by neighborhood on FoodTrailersAustin.com
Karen Webb: Eat at Torchy’s on the way downtown in the mornings.
Marc Rutrough: Eat at Casa Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant
Denise Beeman Douroux: Go to Guero’s Taco Bar if you want real Mexican food, but stay downtown so I wont get stuck in traffic as I stick to my own hood that week.
From Leea Mechling, the Center’s Executive Director: On Guadalupe and Westgate: Madam Mam’s
Dario’s on East 6th Street: Not a fancy place at all, but you’ll see lots of happy Mexicans… I love the salad plate #2)

Eastside Cafe: They have their own garden and make great food

South Congress has lots of fun eateries including Guero’s Taco Bar, the South Congress Cafe and Vespaio’s, a very expensive Italian place but it’s good.

AREAS TO VISIT:

Attend RARE: Hard-to-find posters & prints by Austin artists
Melissa Stewart: There will be a local artists’ market at Guerro’s on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 9pm. Good stuff!
Marc Rutrough: Visit the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture.. It is a fantastic place with a really neat stuff to see.. Look for a tour by Freddy.
Karen Webb: Skip some of that sxsw stuff and hit south Lamar and South First streets…
Dede Thompson Saenz: Enjoy South Congress too
Ann Minner: Go see one of the best independent bookstores in the country – Book People on Lamar. You won’t be sorry.
Sharon Arnoult: Book People, yes, and don’t forget Waterloo Records and Antone’s Records, too, and many other funky, independent, unique shops on lower N. Lamar and South Congress. The Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake to clear your head and get some fresh air.
Sandy Hines: Barton Springs, any of the many greenbelts, rent a bike and ride it around.

Thorne Dreyer of Rag Radio on KOOP, 91.7 FM talks with Leea Mechling and Henry Gonzalez of the South Austin Popular Culture Center. In the hour-long interview, they “discuss Austin culture since the 60s and 70s; its history of exhibitions featuring major graphic and poster artists; and the Memorial Wall featuring fallen heroes of Austin and Texas culture.
